Trevor Shaw’s eSchool News column, “Making IT Work for Learning” contains much of our best thinking on the topic of STEM, school makerspaces, and student-centered learning.

STEM Articles

Here you will find a collection of articles on STEM best practices. We collect a wide range of resources and ideas on how best to integrate the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to make learning relevant and authentic to students.

Makerspace Library

If you run a school makerspace, you probably find yourself answering the same questions on a regular basis. How can I use the hot glue gun safely? What is the best way to build this circuit? Can you teach me to solder? You have probably learned that there is a small collection of skills that students need to master in order to bring their making to the next level. But students don’t all need the same information at the same time. Delivering full-class mini-lessons on various topics may be an efficient way to deliver information, but if students don’t find that information applicable to their work at the time of delivery, the instruction will be less than effective. This collection of how-to documents and videos can be an excellent resource to them as they work. Rather than devoting precious class time to a lesson on gears that only a couple of students might need, you can direct your students to these videos so that they can pull exactly what they need to know when they need to do it. We are “flipping the makerspace.”

Everything You Need to Start Your School Makerspace

Our resources page provides all kinds of resources to schools who are looking to get started with student centered learning, project based learning, STEM or a makerspace library. We have recommendations for the best products to use with different grade levels. We have tips and guides for designing engaging activities. We have lots of instructional documents and links to how-to videos.

Solutions to Common Classroom Challenges

If you are struggling to design a makerspace classroom environment that authentically engages student interest, or if you are trying to build a STEM curriculum that truly puts students at the center of the learning process, these resources can help. Those of us who have worked extensively with students in a student-centered STEM environment know how difficult it is to create a sense of authenticity and relevance. We know how difficult it can be to give students feedback on their performance that is meaningful. The STEM resources on this page provide a great starting place for teachers engaged in the career-long journey to find the balance between teacher goals and student passion in the student-centered classroom.
