is our flagship product, and it provides a “blank-slate” tool for students to invent anything they can imagine. Through a series of engaging challenges, students deepen their understanding of Coding, Electronics, and Design Thinking and invent several Arduino-based creations. A full color Student Guide helps students as they work through their inventions. Coding is presented first using a Block-based tool alongside corresponding Arduino code to help more advanced students make the transition. This kit can add powerful activities to a variety of subject areas for students from sixth grade through university.

Programmable from an iPad, Chromebook, or laptop computer, this kit is designed to give novice students everything they need to begin inventing sophisticated, automated devices.

The Barebones Philosophy

Our approach is to provide products that meet students where they are in the learning process.  Our products strive to be

  • Authentic — mirroring the tools and materials used in the “real-world” Kids want to build real stuff!
  • Scaffolded — Kids need just enough information to get some traction in their work.

We embrace tools that are authentic and mirror the materials that professionals use in the “real world.” Through years of working with students of various ages, we have learned how to provide age appropriate scaffolding for all of these STEM tools. Students need guidance, structure and content knowledge to use real tools, but that structure should never stifle their creativity or confine or direct their thinking. Thus, we provide students with only what they need and nothing more. This barebones approach gives students a basic toolbox of materials and skills leaving the real invention and problem solving up to them and their creativity.

Simple Electronics For Self-Directed Learning

We believe that it’s critical in a makerspace to provide materials that students can use with little or no guidance from adults. Fortunately, there has need a groundswell of electronics kits and STEM tools that are intuitive enough to enable students to dive right in and build amazing things with almost no prior experience or adult guidance. STEM tools such as Little Bits, Makey Makey, Pico-Boards, paper circuits, Hummingbird Robotics, and many others provide an empowering experience for students. Many of these tools can be purchased in our online store.

Arduino in the Classroom

Not only is it important for students to work independently and creatively, they also need to work with real tools in an authentic context. We believe that Arduino microcontrollers are fantastic tools to empower students to do just that. Arduinos are tiny computers that cost about $30 each and provide an interface for student-written code to interact with the physical world. Students can write programs that control lights, motors and sensors. Once students learn Arduino, they can invent almost any electronic device that they can imagine. Our flagship product, Make it All, is a kit designed around the concept of Arduino for Beginners. Arduinos are great, but they don’t make it easy for a beginner to just pick one up and start inventing. The Make It All kit is a great introduction to Arduino for beginners. It includes everything that students and teachers need to begin to learn Arduino and to start innovating right out of the box.

The kit is designed around three Arduino beginner projects. Students learn the fundamental skills to

  • Control LEDs
  • Control DC motors
  • Control servo motors

When students can complete these Arduino beginner projects, they can design and build an array of inventions from robotic vehicles, to illuminated artwork, or kinetic sculptures. This kit helps even novice teachers to use Arduino in the classroom to fuel student innovation.

Arduino Programming for Beginners

Arduino is a great platform to start to learn Physical Computing. The programming language can be difficult for beginners, however. We have designed a system to introduce novice programmers to Arduino programming in a scaffolded way allowing students to build complicated inventions almost immediately. Students begin programming using a block-based language that generates the correct code syntax for them. When they are ready, they can move on to writing native code.

School Robotics

Our products provide an excellent entry point for school robotics programs. Whether you are just getting started, or are looking for materials to improve student engineering or coding skills, you can find what you need in our online store. We offer an array of products ranging from bare bones arduino kits, to ready-to-run Sphero robots. Pico boards can help students become familiar with sensor input, and the Makey Makey boards make it fun for even the youngest students to learn about circuits and sensors.

Our Make It All kit is designed to introduce student inventors to the world of microcontroller programming. Students will build illuminated artwork, kinetic sculptures and programmable vehicles as they learn to program an Arduino and use their creativity to solve various engineering problems.
